Dax Kerchner

🏕

I am a software engineer & educator—I worked for several years each at Amazon (on Amazon Go, back when it was super secret) and Google (yes, Google is as fun to work for as they say). One of my favorite opportunities was teaching at Fullstack Academy—I like coding, but I love coding with 60 people watching me.

I'm currently teaching high school math, but I'm looking to get back into a job that's more software focused—anything that combines coding with taking complex concepts and making them understandable.

I specialize in technical interview prep, having given interviews to candidates at Google. You're welcome to book an appointment at my interview coaching site. Reviews:

  • [Dax] will tailor the interview to your specific skill level. . . . Once the interview is done, he will provide you with a google doc scoring you in different categories from 1-4 based on how well you did (rubric he pulled straight from Google’s hiring process). He also provides written feedback . . .
  • Out of the few mock interviews I have done thus far, my practice with Dax felt the most helpful. He asked targeted questions and shared insights, and my time with him gave me some overall takeaways of things I should think about going into the interview. Dax also is very personable, and you can tell he genuinely has your best interest in mind.

Education

University of Florida
Bachelor of Science, Computer Science & Math (double major) with minor in Physics
2014

Here's a supplemental lesson I once created as additional material for students struggling to understand the application of graph traversals to 2D grids.

I graduated from University of Florida in 2014 with a B.S. in math and computer science and a specialization in exploring the woods, and I am once again living back in Gainesville, Florida.

What I do evenings and weekends

  • Hiking, bicycling, kayaking, indoor rock climbing 🚵
  • Playing music
  • Regularly posting content to the internet (blogging, a webcomic, small indie games) under a pseudonym.
  • Leading a small group/teaching — here’s my sermon on the cultural mandate
  • Having friends over, making them lattes ☕
  • Joining classes at the Christian Study Center. I particularly love conversations around the topics of art and doubt

I always like making new friends, so if you live in north/central Florida and want to join in any of those things—or introduce me to something new—hit me up!

Music

I’ve written a few songs, and I play semi-regularly at open mic nights.

I play in a fingerpicking style on guitar and often in a jazz style on piano. I occasionally play accordion.

I have a few videos of my cover performances on YouTube.

I'm looking to collaborate more with other musicians—particularly if you have percussion, production, or lyric writing skills or are a female vocalist.

I also organize a monthly worship music jam at my house in Gainesville, Florida. I’m always looking for more musicians to join—if you’re nearby, send me a message to get more details!
